According to several national news reports, the cost to UK business as a whole could be £690m a day in lost output and sales. With that in mind, Gloucester based Edgecoms, the IT and communications specialists have some top tips for our second day of snow in the county, to help employers keep business from freezing over completely.

Owen Stinchcombe, MD of the company said “Employers can combat absenteeism due to the bad weather conditions by helping staff to work remotely from home. All it takes is an internet connection and a PC.”

 Tip 1.

Ask your IT provider to set up secure remote access such as a SonicWALL SSL VPN (secure sockets layer virtual private network) for all staff which will enable them to send and receive emails, files and use applications securely.

 Tip 2.

Ensure that once this is in place your staff have clear instructions on how to use their equipment from home and who to contact if they require assistance. Your IT provider should be on hand to give instructions over the phone if necessary or the SSL VPN provider may have optional remote help-desk support for non-IT managed laptops and PC’s.

Tip 3.

Don’t forget, remote access can not only be set up on PCs and laptops but PDA’s and smartphones too. These can connect anywhere so there’s no more excuses of being snowed in at the in-laws!
